A tape measure or scale can produce plenty of numbers; the useful part is knowing what relationship you are actually looking at. ABSI Calculator keeps that question narrow and visible.
What this calculator does
ABSI adds waist circumference to height and weight to describe body shape in a way BMI alone cannot. This calculator also places the ABSI value against an age- and sex-specific reference distribution. Anthropometric equations are convenient because they use simple measurements, but they describe body size or proportion rather than directly measuring tissue composition or health.
How to use it
Enter or select Sex, Age, Height, Weight, and Waist circumference. Use the units offered by the calculator and keep measurements consistent when you plan to compare results over time.
How the calculation works
It first calculates BMI, then applies the published ABSI equation: waist circumference divided by BMI raised to the two-thirds power and the square root of height. The result is standardized with the calculator’s NHANES reference mean and standard deviation to produce an ABSI z-score and a mortality-risk band.
Example
For the sample values prefilled in this calculator, the primary result is 0.08 (ABSI), BMI is 22.86, and ABSI z-score is -0.095. This example is there to show how the inputs flow through the implemented equation; replace the sample values with your own measurements before using the result.
How to interpret the result
Read the raw ABSI together with the z-score rather than treating either as a diagnosis. A z-score near zero is close to the reference average, while positive or negative values indicate how far the result sits above or below that age- and sex-specific reference.
Limitations and notes
ABSI is an epidemiologic risk marker, not a direct measurement of visceral fat or an individual prediction of death. Waist technique matters, and the built-in reference is based on the published NHANES 1999–2004 table used by this calculator; results outside the supported age range should not be extrapolated.
