Root Mean Square Speed Calculator

J/(mol·K)

Gas-law calculations are compact but unforgiving about absolute temperature, pressure, and molar-mass units. Root Mean Square Speed Calculator calculates root-mean-square molecular speed from the idealized state relationship while making those assumptions explicit.

What this calculator does

The Root Mean Square Speed Calculator centers on root-mean-square molecular speed using the fields that are actually present here: Gas, Molar mass, Gas constant, Temperature of gas, RMS speed. Rather than treating every box as an independent input, use the equation below to identify the driving quantities and read the remaining fields as derived or supporting values when appropriate.

How to use it

Choose a gas preset or custom molar mass, then enter absolute temperature. The page uses the gas constant and reports RMS molecular speed.

How the calculation works

For an ideal gas, vrms = √(3RT/M), where M is molar mass in kg/mol and T is absolute temperature. Choosing a gas preset supplies a representative molar mass before the speed is calculated.

Example

For air-like M = 28.965 g/mol at T = 293.15 K, vrms ≈ 502 m/s. Lighter gases are faster at the same temperature because speed varies as 1/√M.

How to interpret the result

For Root Mean Square Speed Calculator, read root-mean-square molecular speed in the context of the equation above. Interpret the result as an ideal-gas or kinetic-theory estimate for the entered state. Verify that pressure is absolute, temperature is on an absolute scale where required, and molar mass is in the unit basis used by R before comparing with laboratory or engineering data.

Limitations and notes

RMS molecular speed is not bulk wind speed and not the speed of sound. It describes the Maxwell–Boltzmann molecular-speed distribution for an ideal gas. Gas mixtures, non-equilibrium states, and high-density real-gas effects are outside this simple expression.
