Activated-sludge operation depends on several related ratios and retention measures, and mixing their units can quickly produce misleading numbers. The Wastewater Calculator brings six common calculations into one workflow: BOD/COD loading and removal, food-to-microorganism ratio, hydraulic retention time, mean cell residence time, sludge age, and sludge volume index.
What this calculator does
Start by choosing what you want to calculate. The visible fields then change for the selected mode. Loading mode uses influent, primary-treated, and final-effluent concentration with flow. F/M mode combines primary-treated BOD or COD loading with aeration volume and MLVSS. HRT uses aeration volume and process flow. MCRT tracks solids inventory against solids leaving, sludge age relates aeration-tank solids to incoming suspended solids, and SVI uses settled sludge volume with MLSS.
How to use it
Keep concentrations, flows, and volumes from the same operating period and use representative averages when the formula calls for average conditions. Choose BOD or COD consistently in the loading and F/M modes. Pay close attention to unit selectors for m³/day versus MGD and for mg/L versus g/L; the calculator normalizes them internally. For MCRT and sludge-age work, verify where each solids concentration is sampled before assuming two plant values are interchangeable.
How the calculation works
Each mode uses its standard forward equation. For F/M, daily substrate loading is concentration × flow, MLVSS inventory is concentration × aeration volume, and F/M is load divided by biomass inventory. HRT is tank volume ÷ flow. MCRT is total solids inventory ÷ solids leaving per day. SVI is 30-minute settled volume in mL/L divided by MLSS in g/L. The other modes use the corresponding mass-balance relationships shown by their input fields.
Example
With the default F/M inputs—200 mg/L primary-treated BOD, 10,000 m³/day process flow, 3,000 m³ aeration volume, and 3 g/L MLVSS—the calculator finds a BOD loading of 2,000 kg/day and an MLVSS inventory of 9,000 kg. The resulting food-to-microorganism ratio is about 0.2222 per day.
How to interpret the result
Interpret every result in the context of the treatment process and operating target. A ratio or retention time is not automatically “good” or “bad” without knowing process type, temperature, sludge characteristics, aeration strategy, influent composition, and plant objectives. Trending the same calculation with consistent sampling is often more useful than comparing one result to a generic textbook range.
Limitations and notes
This tool implements forward calculations; it does not dynamically solve every equation for any missing field. Real wastewater plants also require validated flow measurements, laboratory methods, recycle and waste streams, process-specific mass balances, and permit requirements that may not fit a simplified worksheet. Use plant SOPs and qualified engineering judgment for control changes, compliance decisions, or design work.
Calculator update: This calculator was re-audited against the current reference workflow in v3.39.0. Parity classification: MEDIUM.
