20/20 Vision Calculator for 2020

years

The name suggests an eye-chart calculator, but the current live tool does something different. It combines lifestyle inputs into a small behavior-risk score related to vision-health research, so the safest way to use it is to understand exactly what is—and is not—being calculated.

What this calculator does

This implementation uses four activity ratings, seven Mediterranean-style diet scores, and smoking history. It reports a count of unhealthy behaviors from 0 to 3, along with a physical-activity score, diet score and smoking pack-years. Sex is displayed as an input, but the current calculation does not use it. It does not calculate Snellen acuity, refractive error or a 20/20 visual-acuity fraction.

How to use it

Choose your activity level for work, household tasks, active transport and sports. Score each listed diet component from 1 to 5. If you have ever smoked, enter cigarettes per day and years smoked so pack-years can be estimated. Use values that reflect your usual pattern rather than a particularly good or bad week.

How the calculation works

The four activity choices are added and mapped to a physical-activity score of 1, 3 or 5. The seven diet scores are summed. Pack-years equal cigarettes per day divided by 20, multiplied by years smoked. The engine then counts one unhealthy behavior for low activity, one when the diet total is below 31, and one when pack-years are at least 20.

Example

With the default entries, activity maps to 3 points, the seven diet items total 21, and smoking history contributes 0 pack-years. The calculator therefore returns 1 SCORE and labels it “One unhealthy behavior identified.” This example is a check of the implemented thresholds, not a prediction of eyesight.

How to interpret the result

A lower count means fewer of the three coded lifestyle flags were triggered. It does not mean your vision is normal, and a higher count does not diagnose eye disease. Visual acuity still requires an appropriate eye chart or clinical test, and eye health also depends on factors this tool does not ask about.

Limitations and notes

The current field structure and compact scoring map are a simplified implementation of a research-style lifestyle model. It does not measure the eye, retinal disease, glaucoma, cataract, diabetic retinopathy or refractive error. Because the title can be mistaken for a Snellen calculator, interpret the output only as the lifestyle-behavior score shown on this page.
