Breast Cancer Risk Calculator

years

Breast-cancer risk estimates are most useful when the model and its blind spots are visible. Breast Cancer Risk Calculator applies the risk factors built into this tool to produce an absolute-risk estimate.

What this calculator does

Breast Cancer Risk Calculator uses Current age, Race / ethnicity, Age at first period, Age at first live birth, First-degree relatives with breast cancer, Previous breast biopsies, and Atypical hyperplasia on biopsy to calculate estimated invasive breast-cancer risk. It is built around the exact fields displayed in this plugin rather than a generic version of the topic. Where supported, it also shows Lifetime risk to age 90, Relative risk (<50), and Relative risk (50+) so the primary result is easier to place in context. This is a breast-cancer risk model, not a fertility or pregnancy estimate. Absolute risk depends on the population and variables represented in the model, while hereditary and other high-risk features may require a different assessment.

How to use it

Complete the requested fields, including Current age, Race / ethnicity, Age at first period, Age at first live birth, First-degree relatives with breast cancer, and Previous breast biopsies, then finish the remaining items shown in the calculator. Confirm that each yes/no, category, date, or score option is applied exactly as labeled. Use verified pathology, history, and demographic information from the same clinical assessment rather than estimates when those records are available.

How the calculation works

The engine implements an NCI BCRAT/Gail-style absolute-risk calculation using age, race/ethnicity category, age at menarche, age at first live birth, number of first-degree relatives with breast cancer, number of prior breast biopsies, and atypical hyperplasia status. It combines age-specific baseline hazards and relative-risk terms to estimate invasive breast-cancer risk over five years and to age 90.

Example

Using the sample values prefilled in this calculator, the primary result is 1.073 % 5-year risk (NCI BCRAT / Gail absolute-risk estimate), Lifetime risk to age 90 is 9.9%, and Relative risk (<50) is 1.701. This worked example shows how the plugin’s own default inputs flow through the implemented method; replace them with the correct patient, laboratory, imaging, or personal values before interpreting a result.

How to interpret the result

Read the five-year and lifetime values as BCRAT/Gail-style absolute-risk estimates from the variables represented in this implementation. They are population-based estimates, not a diagnosis or a guarantee that breast cancer will or will not occur.

Limitations and notes

BCRAT/Gail predicts invasive breast-cancer risk for defined populations and does not fully capture hereditary syndromes, detailed family pedigrees, prior chest radiation, breast density, or every high-risk lesion. Risk estimates should be confirmed with the current official NCI tool or a specialist if they could change screening or preventive treatment.
