Choose the problem type and tell us what went wrong.
Questionnaires are most useful when the scoring stays transparent. EPDS Calculator converts the selected responses into the exact scale result implemented here, then leaves diagnosis and care decisions to a fuller assessment.
What this calculator does
EPDS Calculator uses I have been able to laugh and see the funny side of things., I have looked forward with enjoyment to things., I have blamed myself unnecessarily when things went wrong., I have been anxious or worried for no good reason., I have felt scared or panicky for no very good reason., Things have been getting on top of me., and the remaining displayed fields to produce the epds total; use validated local threshold used by this calculator. It only uses the fields shown in this calculator; it does not silently add tests, diagnoses, symptoms, or clinical variables that are absent from the interface. Uses standard health-calculator relationships where a stable equation exists; complex or policy-dependent tools expose assumptions/points so the result can be checked against the current clinical or public-health source.
How to use it
Enter or select I have been able to laugh and see the funny side of things., I have looked forward with enjoyment to things., I have blamed myself unnecessarily when things went wrong., I have been anxious or worried for no good reason., I have felt scared or panicky for no very good reason., and the remaining displayed fields. Choose the response that matches the named questionnaire item and time frame; do not “round” symptoms up or down to reach a preferred total. If an input is unknown, it is better to leave the calculation unresolved than to invent a value.
How the calculation works
The ten Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale item scores are added according to the response values stored in the calculator, yielding a total score. The self-harm item remains clinically important regardless of the total.
Example
Using the calculator’s prefilled demonstration values, the primary output is 0 points, labeled “EPDS total; use validated local threshold”; Items scored is 10. That sample is useful for checking the calculation path, but real interpretation should use verified measurements from the same clinical or study context.
How to interpret the result
Higher totals indicate more perinatal depressive symptoms in the scale, but local thresholds vary. Item 10 should be reviewed separately because potential self-harm cannot be safely reduced to the overall total.
Limitations and notes
EPDS screens for perinatal depressive symptoms; it is not a diagnosis and thresholds vary by setting/language. Any response indicating possible self-harm deserves prompt safety assessment regardless of the total score. The scale also does not replace evaluation for bipolar disorder, psychosis, anxiety, or medical contributors.
