GAD-7 Calculator

Screening scores can organize symptoms, but they should never flatten a person into a number. GAD-7 Calculator adds the responses in the way this instrument expects and keeps the result in a screening—not diagnostic—context.

What this calculator does

GAD-7 Calculator uses Feeling nervous, anxious, or on edge, Not being able to stop or control worrying, Worrying too much about different things, Trouble relaxing, Being so restless that it is hard to sit still, Becoming easily annoyed or irritable, and Feeling afraid as if something awful might happen to produce the minimal range used by this calculator. It only uses the fields shown in this calculator; it does not silently add tests, diagnoses, symptoms, or clinical variables that are absent from the interface. Uses standard health-calculator relationships where a stable equation exists; complex or policy-dependent tools expose assumptions/points so the result can be checked against the current clinical or public-health source.

How to use it

Enter or select Feeling nervous, anxious, or on edge, Not being able to stop or control worrying, Worrying too much about different things, Trouble relaxing, Being so restless that it is hard to sit still, and the remaining displayed fields. Choose the response that matches the named questionnaire item and time frame; do not “round” symptoms up or down to reach a preferred total. If an input is unknown, it is better to leave the calculation unresolved than to invent a value.

How the calculation works

Seven symptom-frequency responses are each scored from 0 to 3 and summed for a 0–21 total. The engine labels 0–4 minimal, 5–9 mild, 10–14 moderate, and 15–21 severe symptom ranges.

Example

Using the calculator’s prefilled demonstration values, the primary output is 0 points, labeled “Minimal range”; Items scored is 7. That sample is useful for checking the calculation path, but real interpretation should use verified measurements from the same clinical or study context.

How to interpret the result

The calculator’s bands describe symptom severity on the questionnaire. A score of 10 or more is commonly used as a clinically important screening threshold, but diagnosis requires history, duration, impairment, and differential assessment.

Limitations and notes

GAD-7 measures recent anxiety symptoms and is useful for screening/severity tracking, but it does not diagnose generalized anxiety disorder on its own. Functional impairment, duration, panic/trauma/OCD symptoms, substance effects, medical causes, and safety concerns still require clinical evaluation.
