Lorentz Force Calculator

A fast lorentz force estimate is valuable only when the setup is clear. Many E&M relationships are simple proportionalities or inverse powers, making a one-input sensitivity check an effective way to catch unit mistakes. The sections below show exactly what this page calculates, how to enter the data, and where the simplified model stops.

What this calculator does

The calculator isolates the relationship between Magnetic Field, Charge, Velocity and Lorentz-force magnitude. That makes it useful for testing how one input changes the answer without mixing in unrelated assumptions.

How to use it

Fill in Magnetic Field, Charge, Velocity, Angle exactly as defined on the page. After calculating, change one influential input slightly and confirm that the result moves in the direction predicted by the equation; this is a quick unit and setup check.

How the calculation works

The intended magnetic-force relationship is F = qvB sinθ. Force magnitude is |F| and the sign can represent orientation under the chosen scalar convention. The current page has a field-name mismatch in the active path, noted below.

Example

The physical relationship gives |F| = |q|vBsinθ. For one elementary charge moving at 1.0×10^6 m/s perpendicular to a 1 T field, the magnitude is about 1.60×10^-13 N. The current page may still show Check inputs because of the field-name mismatch described below.

How to interpret the result

Use the Lorentz-force magnitude as the result of the stated electromagnetic relationship. Check whether the output is linear, inverse, inverse-square, or logarithmic before judging how a change in one input should affect it.

Limitations and notes

The visible form labels the magnetic field key as Field, but an earlier active calculation path looks for a different magnetic-field key. With the current page this can leave the result at Check inputs even when Field, Charge, Velocity, and Angle are filled. The physical qvBsinθ relationship above is valid, but the displayed calculator needs that field mapping corrected.
