Sleep problems are rarely captured by one number, but a focused score can still organize useful information. Sleep Debt Calculator summarizes exactly the inputs shown in the tool.

What this calculator does

Sleep debt is a simple way to describe the gap between the sleep you want and the sleep you actually obtain. This calculator averages seven daily sleep-duration entries and compares that average with your desired nightly sleep. Sleep questionnaires and indices are screening or descriptive tools; symptoms, sleep opportunity, and formal sleep testing may add information that the score cannot capture.

How to use it

Enter sleep duration for each day from Monday through Sunday and your desired nightly sleep. The optional bedtime and wake-time fields can calculate one additional sleep duration, but the weekly debt still comes from the seven daily entries.

How the calculation works

The engine averages Monday through Sunday, then calculates weekly debt as the positive difference between desired sleep and average sleep multiplied by seven. The optional bedtime and wake-time fields also show a single sleep-duration calculation, but they do not replace the seven daily entries in the current debt formula.

Example

For the sample values prefilled in this calculator, the primary result is 3.5 hours/week (Sleep debt), Average sleep is 7 h/night, and Desired sleep is 7.5 h/night. This example is there to show how the inputs flow through the implemented equation; replace the sample values with your own measurements before using the result.

How to interpret the result

A larger weekly debt means the entered week fell further below the desired nightly duration. The result can be useful for noticing patterns, especially when short nights accumulate gradually.

Limitations and notes

“Sleep debt” is a simplified accounting concept: recovery from chronic sleep restriction is not always one-for-one, and sleep quality matters as well as duration. The calculator cannot diagnose insomnia, sleep apnea, circadian disorders, or excessive sleepiness.
