STOP-BANG Calculator

A sleep score is most helpful when you know what went into it. STOP-BANG Calculator keeps the questionnaire or timing calculation straightforward and interpretable.

What this calculator does

STOP-BANG is a widely used screening questionnaire for obstructive sleep apnea. This calculator counts eight yes/no risk features from symptoms, blood pressure, body size, age, neck size, and sex. Sleep questionnaires and indices are screening or descriptive tools; symptoms, sleep opportunity, and formal sleep testing may add information that the score cannot capture.

How to use it

Enter sex, height, and weight, then answer the questions about observed breathing pauses, high blood pressure, age over 50, neck size, snoring, and tiredness. The calculator derives the BMI criterion from height and weight and counts the eight STOP-BANG features.

How the calculation works

One point is assigned for snoring, tiredness, observed breathing pauses, high blood pressure, BMI above 35, age over 50, large neck circumference, and male sex. The points are summed from 0 to 8 and grouped into the tool’s low, intermediate, or high-risk bands.

Example

For the sample values prefilled in this calculator, the primary result is 1 points (Low OSA risk) and BMI is 26.12. This example is there to show how the inputs flow through the implemented equation; replace the sample values with your own measurements before using the result.

How to interpret the result

A higher score means more STOP-BANG risk features are present. The tool is designed to flag who may merit further assessment; it does not measure apnea severity or replace a sleep study.

Limitations and notes

STOP-BANG performance varies with setting and population, and some people with sleep apnea will have lower scores. Neck measurement and BMI should be entered accurately. Symptoms such as witnessed apneas, dangerous sleepiness, or cardiopulmonary disease deserve clinical attention regardless of the score.
